North Austin Science Alliance participates in several science competitions each year.
Science Olympiad - This is an amazing program which is likened to an academic track meet. Each year it consists of 23 different events, and students will choose several of those events according to their interests and skills. Specific events typically consist of pairs or even 3 students, allowing kids to collaborate closely with teammates. Events include chemistry/biology labs, engineering building events, and paper and pencil tests. Astronomy, Earth Sciences, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, Programming, Math, Taxonomy, and more are all represented. Kids who win medals put in hours and hours of prep work, but the rewards are SO very worth it!
NASA typically participates in 2 - 4 Science Olympiad competitions per year. At least two of those are local and take place here in Austin at The University of Texas. Additional Invitational competitions may be local or out-of-town. The out-of-town competitions are usually in the Houston area and typically require an overnight stay. Travel expenses for these events are the families' responsibility.
This is a great article that really spells out the work and rewards that accompany this nationally recognized event.
Science Bowl - Sponsored by the National Department of Energy, the Science Bowl is a fast-paced question and answer trivia game played with buzzers. Successful Science Bowl teams are competitive, ambitious, and have a great reservoir of knowledge from which to draw. Science Bowl participation is not mandatory; NASA kids may choose to put together 4-person teams and enter the competition on any given year. The competition takes place at Texas A&M University in College Station, and NASA's coaching staff is always ready to lead and support those interested in Science Bowl.
Math Counts - Kids in the NASA Math Club may optionally choose to participate in Math Counts, a national math competition held in February.
