What the NASA High School team is all about
The NASA high school team is a competitive science team for teens who enjoy science or any other STEM subjects. The recommended age range is 9th - 12th grade. Advanced 8th graders may be considered if they are already completing high school and/or AP level work and exhibit the maturity and well-developed communication skills required.
Our teens are a welcoming, open-minded group who love laughter, learning, and in-depth discussions on any and every topic. Deep friendships and real connections are vitally important in this age group, and can be arguably more difficult to develop in our post-pandemic world. Come visit and see if NASA's what your high schooler is missing.
NASA's high school program encompasses study and preparation for Science Olympiad competitions. Meetings may include break-out collaborative study time for individuals and small groups, lectures and instruction on particular topics, discussion and analysis of various current events and discoveries within the scientific community, science videos or documentaries, just-for-fun social time, games, and other media & activities that build community, increase knowledge, and promote team spirit.
The educational level of the content covered in Science Olympiad events is advanced and AP level through college and even post-graduate levels. Preparation and study for Olympiad events will require independent work at home in addition to our regular meetings.
At NASA, our activities are geared toward preparing high school kids for competitions as well as success at the college level and beyond. Students are required to participate in Science Olympiad and may choose to create and participate in a Science Bowl team. Students must live in either Williamson or Travis County per Science Olympiad rules.
The study, test-taking, and time management skills honed via Science Olympiad participation build confidence and can benefit students preparing for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests. Placing highly on individual events at competitions is a great way to round out one's college application with needed extracurriculars and awards. And, we've heard time and time again from university students and faculty that participation in Science Olympiad is a selling point with college admissions personnel and can help a student stand out from the crowd.
Our high school team typically meets August through April on the 1st, 3rd, and any 5th Fridays of the month at 12:00 - 2:00 to accommodate our Dual Credit students. Meetings are held in Round Rock in the Sam Bass Road area. Per Science Olympiad rules, students must reside in either Travis or Williamson county and cannot be enrolled in an online or virtual public high school - please ask us if you have eligibility questions! See the FAQs section above for more information.
We currently have openings for homeschooled teens with interests in science, math, and all STEM subjects. Contact us with questions at [email protected] or complete the Interest Form here: forms.gle/zJvwzkRGZKLhMQQS6
